Especially our sense of smell. If you were anywhere near me when I lost control that way…"
Edward Cullen, Twilight, Chapter 11, p.225

I plan on reading the phenomenon that Twilight is over this Christmas break I have coming up, but after seeing the film a few times, many allusions come to mind. One such instance came up this past Sunday in church. As it is human nature, it is so easy to give in to our natural tendency to give into our senses. There is that need for us to "feed", and let's say its not too taboo to use this example from vampires in our own lives as Christians.

Let us remember that the reason we claim we are followers of Christ is not that we have found the answer, or that we even know the truth, or that we are somehow fixed or destined for good. The actual opposite is true. We have admitted we are lost on our own, have no answers and completely trust in someone else to guide us -- and that we cannot live without giving into our senses and making utter and dreadful decisions on a constant basis.

Which is why -- at least in my church, we confess this, and drink the blood of Christ and eat his body on a weekly basis. There is not a fix-all formula, there is no permanent solution. We need to "feed" on this blood.

Unlike Edward Cullen, we don't have to starve ourselves from the true blood of the one we truly desire. It has been made possible -- and the rules broken for us to continue to feed on the blood of Christ -- to keep us fully made whole, and to remember we are broken people living in a broken world and despite our shortcomings can still come to the table where the blood is the ultimate ending.

Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us. Amen.

L e g a t o

It seems we all are looking for that perfect love. A lot has changed since we last marked this day in history. Many are political, global, emotional but on a personal level, I have been taught many, many things through these last few months and weeks about our nation and our world of ... people.

I did something somewhat out of the norm and out of my comfort level just a bit -- and how invigorating!! Tonight, I met at least 15 people I had never seen before, and would normally never "hang" with. What I have learned is just this --- that all of us have a lot to learn from other great people.

A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine passed through the great divide and left this earth. Like so many of us affected by his death, my view of life has been put on its side -- almost put through a strainer so that all the stuff that we bicker about and hold important falls right through the cracks in life; and all that is left is the pure and wholeness of that substance humanity is. It is an amazing thing we call --- life.

The soulful ones we encounter everyday; pass in the grocery store, stand and wait for our coffee order side by side, sit next to in traffic, stand behind in the bank --- all have an amazing gift that only they possess -- and only they have the power to give it to the world. Some of us that are a bit overachieving (me) and think we have it all figured out, can learn a lot from these people we don't know.

The biggest thing my friend Justin was remembered for was his piercing and enchanting smile. One gesture, one look, one invitation can make someone's day a little better or make a long week not so bad. It took one invitation to invite me to a cookout today, that I normally would have brushed aside -- that presented a great intrinsity to us everywhere. Everyone is watching you. Love them with a hug, lending spare change, giving a ride --- or just a Smile.

Only warmth

It is a scientific fact that it is impossible to create "cold."

Coldness is caused by the absence of heat and warmth.

So next time you look at someone and label them as "cold"--- maybe they are just lacking a little warmth. It's right before you go to sleep, just before you fall away; what is it that you think of? Is it a person? Is it your job?

It's that thing we think is unfinished in our lives, something we don't have control over. And it scares us. But you know, it's important to remember that this is the important thing that makes us who we are as people on this earth. How dull would it be to have a "perfect" life--to have no struggle, no sadness, nothing to recover from?

Relief. It's one of the simple pleasures in life we take for granted. So you see--we need these negative things in our lives , in order for there to be a positive.

Life is about living through a cycle of knowledge, and then faith, knowledge, and faith. Believing something will happen, yet not knowing for sure. Pain, struggle, and then--------- a sigh.

Relief.

I am happy to know that I am a bettered person, and a more understanding individual because of the hurts that I have experienced in my own life, and seeing it through others. We assess the value of education in the same manner as we assess the value of land or of shares in the stock-exchange market. We want to provide only such education as would enable the student to earn more. We hardly give any thought to the improvement of the character of the educated. The girls, we say, do not have to earn; so why should they be educated? As long as such ideas persist there is no hope of our ever knowing the true value of education."

-M. K. Gandhi

The children that we help raise in the field of education, especially in the community of the poverty stricken and at-risk have more needs that we can not provide for. Education is essential to human success -- but it is not valued that way.

If you're reading this, chances are you probably had a privileged upbringing. For one, you have access to a computer, probably in your home that is connected to the internet; that you at least used to use for typing your college-level essays. This means you value your education. Most of my kids have no reason to have any value for their education, or wonder why we get mad when they don't finish their math test -- or when they call each other names to stand their ground. The fact is they don't care. And why should they? Most of our students wonder where their next meal is coming from, or worried about who will have custody of them this week, or wondering if their only real family, their friends will leave them because they don't join the group activities they do, or maybe worried that the boy that got them pregnant won't help with the raising of their own child. They have no need for a teacher telling them what they should do and where to go, and what to write and to be concerned about numbers from 1 to 100 that will "affect their future lives." What proof do they have?

We need to meet our kids on their level --get them out of their shallow and narrow communities and actually show them what they can work for. We need to give them hope to become a better person, not just a good student. So that really begs the question... do the powers that be really think about these things when they write and enforce this new act.. No Child Left Behind.

This year, NCLB is up for reauthorization, and a commission has come up with some vital changes. The focus seems to be simply adding more mandates on schools, principles and teachers who do not show improvement. What about the students that are improving; who do show effort; and who do value their education? Ironically it is the innately driven and successful students in the “unsatisfactory” schools that are being left behind. These students are not being rewarded for their progress on an individual basis. This is what many in the education community are screaming. It is not always about the “highly qualified” teachers. Sometimes you need highly driven students. No one can make you want to learn. As the old adage says

“Teachers open the door, but you must enter yourself.”

<img width='1' height='1' debuted in Toronto, Canada. Unfortunatley, the critics did not take to the four-hour long production very well, saying things like it was "dull" and "unimpressive." I'm quite curious to see what the fuss is about, but sadly the musical is already set to close.

The musical will be again opening in London early May 2007.

Click Here for LOTR Musical Website

Death . . . or just Sleep?

This past Sunday, I went to church as I do every week. The sermon for that day pointed my mind in a direction that was enlightening to myself, especially during the events of these last few weeks, and the nature of my previous post on the General Convention of the Episcopal Church.

The gospel reading for the day was Mark 5:22-24 and 35-43. It is a somewhat popular passage that I've heard many times growing up. This time, however, as one does, the priest related this story to our modern day lives. The girl had been dying, according to her father, and then later it was told they were too late -- she was already dead. They were saying "Don't even bother with Jesus now.. its too late.. there's no need for him now. She's dead."

We are professional mourners. We know death when we see it and quickly label it as so. We are not willing to let this person called Jesus even enter in to try and save this girl because we say she is dead. "Don't be afraid; just believe." This is what he told those that were skeptical. "He went in and said to them "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep." They laughed at him. He then told the child to get up and she did. The people were astonished.

During the sermon I immediately thought about the post on this blog about the state of the Episcopal Church I had written just a few days earlier. I realized that many .. and myself had quickly labeled this new change as death. We are quick to assume the end or a negative wind of change. We say to ourselves, "Well---its too late now. The church is corrupt. I guess we just give up."

This challenged my thinking. We may be quickly labeling the changes in the ECUSA as death, but may not recognize it as sleep, and allowing Jesus to come in and wake the child, to perform a miracle for our church and humanity as a whole. Something to think about . . .

"Don't be afraid; just believe."

Interesting View

Her Majesty Elected

For those following the recent decisions and happenings in the ECUSA (The Episcopal Church) and those not, there are some landmarking decisions being made, and a quite frightening possible future for our state of the Christian church. As one of the Anglican faith myself, I am troubled by the strife being caused by those that let their political minds and strength of human thought get in the way of our supreme authority which has always been the Bible. It seems now that this authority is now being seen as not as important.

I have been recently confirmed in the Episcopal church just about a year ago, so I am not fully confident in my understandings of what is completley at issue here, so I have provided a few trustworthy links to sources which will provide you with more information. What I can gather is this:

The Episcopal Church is basically the American Arm of the Anglican Worldwide Communion (The Church of England) and is accepted in this communion by a means of having these meetings which have just occured.

The Church of England under a group called The Lambeth Commission which makes a very detailed and lengthy document of membership into the communion rulebook so to speak to be allowed to be in this Worldwide communion. This document is entitled The Windsor Report.

Several items on The Windsor Report were not followed by the voting Bishops of the ECUSA, such as not observing a moratorium on same-sex unions, and also creating new issues of "acceptance" of all by omitting all gender-specifics from the Liturgy i.e. (Bishop-elect Katharine Jefforts referred to "Our Mother Jesus" in her sermon. Other items of issue include the re-naming of the Trinity as to not offend and to include others. (See cartoon below)

The actual election of a female Bishop which has never been done, was seen as a political victory for women rights in the ECUSA. Presiding Bishop-elect Jefferts Schori has only been a bishop for five years, and has never been the rector (Senior Pastor) of a parish (church).

My view on this entire thing is quite foggy. I am all about inclusion of all humans into the church which is one of the main reasons I decided to join the Anglican communion, but one of our main premises is to "Accept you where you are and let Christ change you in your walk on his time table." It seems as the political end of the church is making this decision for God instead of letting Him move, or should we say Her now...

Our American minds as a whole are becoming too skiddish. There is no feeling of absolute anymore. There is no authority. We are asking for forgiveness of things we are not even responsible for. We don't want to offend anyone. We are asking teachers to grade in purple ink instead of red ink as to not offend the students. I wonder if I am now sounding treasonic in my statements by saying America has become a center of sloth, neglegence and not home of the brave but actually the opposite... the weak minded, and afraid to make bold standards for living. Especially after coming back from Europe, I can see why the rest of the world thinks the USA is a country of misfits and nutcases.

Video of Ken Harmon (Canon from SC) commenting on week of the ECUSA convention.

View Presiding Bishop-Elect Katharine Jefferts Schori and her mention of Mother Jesus.

More "ideals" from the Bishop-elect

Speech after Election

LINKS

Lydia Evans Blog on ECUSA Convention 2006

TitusOneNine Blog from South Carolina Canon Ken Harmon

Church of the Holy Cross (Sullivans Island, SC)
The Very Rev. I'm not so much into it anymore, but yeah if it's on, I'll watch it. I've been somewhat keeping up with this season's cast. Usually I just don't care about all the drama, but watching tonight's episode I felt I needed to express my frustratin towards Tyler. Simply put, he is just a bitch. All this anger, and false confidence comes from his insecurities. He expects forgiveness and special treatment just because he is gay. Bullcrap-- he is a person and should be treated as such, just as anyother person who is disrespective of others should be treated. There is obviously zero depth to Tyler as is the same with most of the gay community his age, and is unwilling to try to work on his inner self instead of throwing his "I am gay get over it" attitude all over anyone.

Through many things I've experienced these last couple months, alot of our problems we have socially, and I also include myself in this, is that we are all TOO SELFISH. We should truly strive to look out for the needs of others. When we are faced with a decision, we should ask our selves "How can I change my view to help benefit others and make a difference in somone else's life?" Gay, Straight, Bi, Lesbian, Trans, alien . . . whatever you are. You are ultimatley human, and should remember that each one of us has a unique person and character inside. Do not label it as something that already exists, but find your true self. You may be surprised who that is.

Listen to the Wind

And it came into passing
that the Descendants of Adam
At the Great Feast of the Tabernacles
Spent seven Days
In the Boughs of the Trees

So it is now, young friend
You and I can hold court
And sway up here
in the very blows of the Wind's Breath
Look down at the loch
with a Buzzard's eye view
A wider scope for our plans
While the merry minstrel robin
The resounding wren of the den
Sing youth's incredible song
Then later, at nightfall,
As if thorough owl's pupils
We can stare into our souls
and ask:
What lyric did the robin bring?
What hope the wounded wren sing?

Child go break off from the herd
go beyond the lowlands
leave the valley of shed antlers
the elders are sick
it is your time now

(for adam mcintosh, 6 December 1997)
(Written by Barnie McCormack, Bard of Craigencalt)

This is a poem written for Adam from the story Of A Lad Called Adam in an earlier post. It's been a while, and of course they've changed everything I was used to last year. New computers, new ordering techniques, new table numbers --- and they just threw me in a section, and I had to tread water. I did pretty well for my first day back though... Only one meal comp ... lol.

I had forgotten how much hard work being a server is-- it's tough, and you really earn every dollar. Hats off to those of you that do it full time!!!

One good thing is I get to eat pretty cheap, so I rewarded my first day of work with a half off lunch. I had the smoking section, which sometimes tends to be a little redneckish.. but it went pretty well today, and I had some nice people to talk to. It's a culture shock coming back from the UK and how restaurants are run over there. Americans seem to be so . . . . needy. We all should just calm down, and enjoy our glass of wine or beer and RELAX!!

A Night at the Tavern

Last night was spent watching some live music by some talented folks -- two in particular to mention was Firefly Summer whose Yellow Card reminiscence and powerful vocals were a sound to remember, and the very talented and vintage-warped The Explorers Club were of course amazing as always. It's funny, because right after I got back to the USA, maybe because I wanted to have a flutter from the UK , and I put in my old Hopes and Fears album, which I love, and said to myself, GOSH when are they gonna put out another album?? And here we are with the newie. I LOVE it of course... To me its a mix between MUSE and Radiohead which is a great combination...

You can visit the KEANE site by clicking on their image on the right.
I went and saw KEANE when they came to the Plex here in Charleston, SC. Meredith, Josh, and Dion and I walked and browsed through the different booths looking at all of the various goods that were there. "Two Skies Design" it said. But I hadn't noticed the name of the booth until after I had spoken with him and was intrigued by the mere presence of this character. So cool he looked with his v-necked European fabric shirt and jeans with his barefeet walking around the pavement -- looking reminiscent of a hippy. The lad was enjoying life, smiling and showing his excitement to his customers about where his rocks came from. "This one is called Palus from the Eastern Coast of Africa. I dug that one me self out the mine." Meredith bought some opaque circular earrings for six pounds. "Where abouts you from?" he asked. "America, in South Carolina, Charleston." "Ahh yeah...cool." His hands were on his hips as if he had just completed a job with satisfaction, looking up at us with his mischievious and full of life face and long curly blonde hair, and a leather motorcycle helmet on his head complete with dark circular goggles resting on the top. What a cool guy, I thought to myself, and I just knew I had to get to know this person more. "We're about to go eat lunch, any ideas?" I asked. "Yeah! There's a great place called the Baked Potato Shop just down there, I get 'em all the time. I needed a picture of him. "Go take one, Adam won't mind." A fellow vendor had overheard our conversation, and encouraged us to fulfill our game of picture taking with a chuckle. I went back up to the booth. "Adam, can we have a picture of ya?" "Aw.. sure mate" With a smile, and pulling down his goggles, for his pose, I took one. "Cheers!" I said and left somewhat satisfied, grabbing a business card.

Later, after dinner and a change of clothing, we decided to come back, mostly because I wanted an excuse to talk to him further. Meredith didn't mind shopping for more jewelry anyhow. "Back again, eh?" Adam said. "Yeah, your jewelry is beautiful" said Meredith. "What you guys up to tonight?" "You've been drinking yet? Ehy? They were so close that when his master died, "Bobby" would go and visit his grave every day for 14 years. When the dog died, the city put up a statue of Bobby and surrounding areas named their stores and pubs after him. We enjoyed some appetizer type food and had a few drinks. After a good meal and some laughs, we decided to hit up Sandy Belles to see what the fuss was about. After following Adam's directions, we stopped about halfway, second guessing ourselves as to where we were going. Using this for an opportunity and an acceptable solution, I said "Well just wait here, and I'll go ask Adam if we're going the right way." Dion and I walked back up the street to where Adam's stand was. Dion sort of lagged behind, having the inkling that I'd rather approach him alone. Adam had removed his helmet now, and all of his bright blonde hair was blowing in the wind as he was working on some displays behind his stall. No wonder us Christians are looked upon the way we are... Shirly Phelps-Roper is from Topeka, Kansas and belongs to a soldier funeral protest group which is also affiliated with her church.

April 6th, 2006, Army Spc. Daniel Sesker was killed in Iraq when an explosive device detonated near his humvee. When over 1,000 gathered for his funeral, Roper and others gathered with hate signs reading "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" , "Fags Go To Hell", etc.

Again, fundamentalist and in this case "psychotic" churches are turning their "political party" into interference of people's lives, and involving homosexuals as the cause for soldier's deaths, and September 11th. Apparently they are to blame for all of these travesties.

Take a look for yourself.

Click Here to Watch the Fox News Interview

Click Here for a Video she has made

And Here's Another

If you're interested, here is her address:

Brent and Shirley Roper

3640 SW Churchill Rd

Topeka, KS 66604

785-273-7262

785-273-0277

785-273-1080

What in the hell is going on?????

UPDATE: The Fuzz does not affiliate this church with any particular Baptist organization.
